PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the world’s longest bi-lane project in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday. The tunnel, built at a cost of ₹ 825 crore, connects Tezpur to Tawang along the Line of Actual Control with China.
Earlier, on February 9, 2019, PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the “Sela Tunnel” project. All you need to know more about this Sela Tunnel. It will be the world’s longest bi-lane tunnel, with an elevation of more than 13,000 feet.
The Border Road Organization (BRO) will carry out the project, which includes two tunnels and a connector road. Tunnel 1 is a 980-meter-long single-tube tunnel, whereas Tunnel 2 is a 1,555-meter-long twin-tube tunnel with one bi-lane tube for traffic and another for emergency services.
The connection road between these tunnels is 1,200 meters long. The completion of this massive project needed over 90 lakh man-hours, with an average of 650 workers and laborers contributing daily for the past five years.
The building required over 71,000 metric tons of cement, 5,000 metric tons of steel, and 800 metric tons of explosives. The Sela Tunnel has modern technologies such as jet fan ventilation, firefighting equipment, and SCADA-controlled monitoring to improve safety and efficiency.
The Sela Tunnel, located 400 meters below the Sela Pass, provides an essential passageway even during the winter season. The tunnel allows them to move troops, weapons, and machinery fast across the Sino-India border.
