Rajya Sabha Chairperson Dhankar Burst Out laughing After Jaya Bachchan’s Introduction!

Days after objecting to the Rajya Sabha Chairperson referring to her as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan”, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Friday introduced herself as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” on the floor of the House. This introduction by the Rajya Sabha MP evoked a priceless reaction from Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, who burst out laughing. Several Opposition MPs like Congress’s Jairam Ramesh and AAP’s Raghav Chadha were also present, and laughed along with Dhankhar.

Jaya Bachchan then engaged in a playful banter with Jagdeep Dhankhar, saying “Did you get a lunch break today? No? This is why you’re taking Jairam ji’s name repeatedly. You cannot digest your food without taking his name”. Dhankhar responded, “I’ll tell you on a light-hearted note. I did not take lunch break today but I had lunch with Jairam ji.”Dhankhar’s response also evoked laughter in the House.

During an address in Rajya Sabha on July 29, Jaya Bachchan had raised a strong objection when the Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh referred to her as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan”. “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed,” she asserted. “This is something new, that women will be recognised by the name of their husbands, like they (women) have no existence or achievements of their own,” she added. In response, the Deputy Chairman, smiling, reminded her that her full name in the records was “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan”.
