The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched Mahua Moitra, the head of the Trinamool Congress,’s Kolkata home today in connection with the cash-for-query case. This occurs one day after Mahua Moitra was the subject of a First Information Report, or FIR, filed by the CBI. Earlier this week, the Lokpal anti-corruption authority requested that the CBI look into the accusations against Moitra and provide a report in six months.
Additionally, the CBI was requested to submit monthly periodic reports outlining the investigation’s progress. “After careful evaluation and consideration of the entire material on record, there remains no doubt regarding the fact that the allegations leveled against the Respondent Public Servant (RPS), most of which are supported by cogent evidence, are extremely serious in nature, especially in view of the position held by her,” Lokpal wrote in his ruling. In December of last year, Mahua Moitra was kicked out of the Lok Sabha. Following allegations that the (now-former) MP accepted bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for raising critical questions of the Narendra Modi government in Parliament, an ethics tribunal recommended that the now-former MP be removed. She was further accused of giving out private login information for the parliamentary website so that Mr. Hiranandani could ask direct inquiries. Although Moitra acknowledged disclosing the login credentials, she refuted the allegations of bribery. She said that it is customary for MPs to share these facts. On appeal to the Supreme Court, she has contested her removal.
