The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) raided the premises of West Bengal minister and TMC leader Sujit Bose in Kolkata today. The raids were conducted in connection with a municipality jobs scam. Tight security has been deployed at the locations where the raids are underway.
When the ED arrested Kolkata-based builder Ayan Sheel on March 19 in connection with the school jobs scam, the alleged irregularities in municipality recruitments came to light. The ED officials claimed that during a search operation in Ayan’s Salt Lake office, OMR (answer) sheets of candidates for various posts in several municipalities were found.
Earlier in August 2023, the CBI summoned Bose for questioning in the ongoing probe into alleged irregularities in municipal appointments between 2014 and 2016. The state government’s request for a stay of the Calcutta High Court’s judgment directing the CBI to look into the purported municipal hiring scam was denied by the Kolkata High Court.
The Calcutta High Court was notified by the authorities (CBI and ED) of connections between the bribe-for-job scheme in the West Bengal school education department, which has resulted in the arrest of former education minister Partha Chatterjee, and the municipal body recruitment fraud.
From 2010 until 2021, Bose served as vice chairman of the South Dum Dum Municipality, during which time he hired close to 250 individuals.
