Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge today slammed the Centre over the issue of thousands of Indians seeking jobs in Israel amid the war with Hamas. He claimed that there has been widespread rural distress, and so the people are willing to risk their lives during the ongoing war.
He further claimed PM Narendra Modi’s government, highlighting that in 2022–203, the daily wage for men in rural India was ₹212, whereas it was ₹220 in 2014. He also asserted that in the past 5 years, under the Modi Govt, growth rate of real rural wages has become negative for both agriculture (-0.6%) and non-agriculture (-1.4%), which means there is widespread rural distress.
Using his ‘X’ handle, Kharge emphasized that formal job creation has reached a 30-month low, indicating that educated youth are not able to find employment. The need for labor under MGNREGA is growing every day. The high rate of rural unemployment compelled the Modi government to allocate an additional ₹28,000 crore, despite cutting back on funding in the Budget 2023–24, he continued.
He further noted that the actual disbursement of funds to panchayats has been 10.4% less than what was promised in the 14th Finance Commission (2015–2020), and the trend has continued.
