West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused members of the CPI(M) and BJP of being involved in the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has accused members of the CPI(M) and BJP of being involved in the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during protests against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. After a meeting with the Governor, Banerjee stated that the individuals responsible for the destruction were “outsiders” and not affiliated with the student body of the medical college.
Banerjee emphasized that she had received information indicating that political workers from both parties were responsible for the unrest, asserting that students had no part in the incident. She condemned the vandalism and announced plans to hold a rally demanding capital punishment for the accused in the case.
The Chief Minister noted that she had observed flags from both the Left and BJP during the chaos, which included an assault on police officers. She expressed concern for the safety of her officers, one of whom was reportedly injured during the incident. Banerjee reiterated that the police acted with restraint and did not escalate the situation further.
The vandalism occurred amid widespread protests, including a “Reclaim the Night” demonstration, following the tragic murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the hospital. While the protests were largely peaceful, a group of approximately 40 to 50 individuals forcibly entered the hospital, leading to significant property damage and prompting police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
In response to the incident, the BJP has called for Banerjee’s resignation, alleging a failure to maintain law and order. The party plans to hold protests, including a candlelight vigil near Banerjee’s residence, to express their discontent over the situation.
