Congress national chief Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to be appointed as the chairperson of the opposition INDIA bloc today. However, this came after the INDIA bloc of the 28 opposition parties conducted discussions in a virtual meeting via Zoom today. Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc has yet to make an official announcement regarding the chairperson of the opposition’s ‘INDIA’ bloc.
It is known that INDIA bloc, or ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’, is a group of at least 28 opposition parties, including the Congress. Meanwhile, the opposition parties have come together to take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the INDIA bloc was formed to stop the BJP from winning a third straight term at the Centre in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
However, choosing a chairperson of INDIA bloc is only one facet of the many challenges faced by the INDIA bloc. The opposing party leaders still have to tackle the issue of seat-sharing between all the parties across all the states and Union territories. In the virtual meeting, Congress’s discussion with AAP is also proving contentious. In both Delhi and Punjab, the ruling party wants the biggest share of seats.
