Vijay Diwas: Honoring India’s Historic 1971 Big Victory

Vijay Diwas is observed today, December 16, to mark India’s historic and grand victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. On December 16, 1971, Pakistani Army Chief AAK Niazi surrendered to Indian tri-forces in Dhaka along with 93,000 troops. This decisive triumph led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the birth of independent Bangladesh.
