Mohammed Shami is focused on regaining full fitness after his ankle surgery and is prepared to play domestic cricket if necessary to ensure he’s match-ready. He spoke at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) annual awards ceremony, expressing his commitment to returning at 100% fitness, despite the possibility of playing domestic matches before rejoining the international circuit.
Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, is currently undergoing rehabilitation. While he has started bowling again, he is determined not to rush his comeback to avoid re-injury. Shami is expected to make a return for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, with potential appearances in the matches against UP and Bihar.
Looking ahead, Shami is anticipated to be a key player for India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, expressing confidence in India’s chances. At the CAB ceremony, he was recognized for his long-standing contributions to Bengal cricket, despite his origins in Uttar Pradesh.
The ceremony also honored other Bengal cricketers: Anustup Majumdar as ‘Cricketer of the Year’, Abishek Porel as ‘Gentleman Cricketer of the Year’, Suraj Singh Jaiswal as ‘Best Fast Bowler of the Year’, and Chandrahas Dash as ‘Best Under-19 Cricketer’. Women cricketers Deepti Sharma and Saika Ishaque were also celebrated for their performances in the Senior Women’s T20 and One-Day tournaments.
