SC Upholds Key Section Of Citizenship Act Affirming Assam Accord

The Supreme Court’s five-judge Constitution bench on Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, amended in 1955 as part of the Assam Accord. In a 4-1 decision, the bench confirmed that this section grants citizenship benefits to illegal immigrants, primarily from Bangladesh, who entered Assam between January 1, 1966, and March 25, 1971.
