The billionaire internet entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has described India’s non-membership on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as “absurd.” The CEO of Tesla declared that the UNSC has to be reorganized since the most populous countries in the world are not sufficiently represented in its current configuration.
Musk, taking to his official handle X, stated, “At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. The problem is that those with this excess power doesn’t want to give it up. Despite being the most populous country on Earth, India not having a permanent seat in the Security Council is absurd.”
Additionally, he supported Africa’s permanent membership in the highest UN body. India has been fighting for a permanent seat at the UNSC table for years. However, China has opposed India’s attempts to obtain a permanent seat by using its veto power to prevent India’s membership.
Nevertheless, the United States and France, two other permanent members, have supported India’s candidacy. Currently, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China are the five permanent members of the UNSC, or the “P5”.
These countries have a lot of authority, which includes veto power over resolutions. Elected to two-year terms, non-permanent members participate in the council’s agenda but are not granted the same veto power as their permanent counterparts.
