On Sunday, Mikheil Kavelashvili, a far-right former footballer and loyalist of Georgia’s ruling party, was inaugurated as president, despite opposition claims of an “illegitimate” election. Outgoing President Salome Zurabishvili declared herself the “only legitimate president” and vowed to continue opposing the Georgian Dream party, which controls the parliament.
