EU Regulator Imposes €91 Million Fine On Meta For Improper Password Storage

The EU’s lead privacy regulator fined Meta €91 million ($101.5 million) for storing users’ passwords in plaintext without encryption. The inquiry began five years ago after Meta reported the issue to Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC). While Meta acted to rectify the error in 2019 and no abuse was reported, the DPC emphasized the risks associated with such practices.
