Assam Reports 80 Deaths In Encounters, Custody Since 2021

80 people have died in police custody or encounters in Assam since 2021, minister Rupesh Goala told the Assembly, with 78 cases probed. Deaths declined yearly, and 223 suspects were injured in encounters. Probes followed NHRC norms, including a high-level inquiry in Cachar. Assam’s prisons hold 11,241 inmates against a capacity of 11,372.
