Amid tight security, Phase 1 of the Kerala local body elections began on Tuesday in 11,168 wards. A total of 36,630 candidates are contesting, including 17,056 men, 19,573 women and one transgender candidate. The phase covers gram, block and district panchayats, municipal and corporation wards. Phase 2 is on December 11, with counting on December 13.
