Iran carried out at least 975 executions last year, marking a sharp rise in capital punishment, according to Norway-based IHR and French group ECPM. The highest since 2008, the groups called it a “horrifying escalation” and accused Tehran of using executions to suppress dissent. IHR’s director warned that executions surged as tensions with Israel grew, averaging five per day in late 2024.
