The RBI announced that ₹5,884 crore worth of ₹2,000 notes remain in circulation as of September 30, 2025, down sharply from ₹3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, when their withdrawal was announced. While still legal tender, 98.35% of the notes have been returned. Exchange and deposit facilities continue at RBI’s 19 issue offices and via India Post.
