Sanae Takaichi has become Japan’s first female Prime Minister after winning a majority in the 465-seat lower house with 237 votes. As the head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, her victory marks a historic moment. Takaichi has previously held key ministerial roles under former prime ministers Shinzo Abe and Fumio Kishida.
