The students who did not appear for the NEET UG 2024 retest will have their original scores from the May 5, 2024 exam without the grace marks. 750 out of the 1,563 eligible candidates skipped the retest held on June 23, 2024.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) had awarded grace marks to these 1,563 students due to “loss of exam time”. However, the NTA later withdrew these grace marks and offered the students the option to take a retest on June 23. The retest was conducted in 7 exam centers across Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Haryana, and Meghalaya.
The decision to award grace marks was made following the same formula approved by the Supreme Court in a similar situation that arose in the 2018 CLAT exam. The unusually high number of perfect scores in the NEET UG 2024 exam initially led to the grace marks being given due to a faulty question and logistical issues.
However, an investigation by the Bihar Police revealed that a few candidates had received the questions a night before the exam, leading to widespread accusations of a paper leak. The Supreme Court intervened, reprimanding the NTA’s handling of the matter. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now taken charge of the probe following a complaint by the Ministry of Human Resources.
