External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in Kuwait on Sunday for a day-long visit aimed at discussing and enhancing India-Kuwait bilateral relations. Upon his arrival, Jaishankar was warmly received by Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya. In his message, Jaishankar expressed gratitude for the reception and anticipation for his meetings with Kuwaiti leaders.
During his visit, Jaishankar met with Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Muhammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah and Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah. The discussions focused on strengthening ties between the two nations across various domains, including political, trade, investment, energy, and cultural exchanges. Jaishankar conveyed the greetings of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and appreciated the Kuwaiti leadership’s perspectives on enhancing bilateral cooperation.
The visit is significant as it follows a devastating fire in June that claimed the lives of 45 Indians in Kuwait. The fire, which occurred at a seven-storey building in Mangaf, also resulted in 49 foreign workers’ deaths and injuries to 50 others. In response to the tragedy, Kuwaiti authorities have taken steps to address the incident’s circumstances. Engineer Saud Al-Dabbous, Director General of Kuwait Municipality, has suspended several officials, including key personnel from the Hawalli and Al-Ahmadi Governorate Affairs and the Violations Removal Department, pending an investigation.
Jaishankar’s visit provided an opportunity for both sides to review and discuss the extensive aspects of their bilateral relationship. The ongoing dialogue aims to reinforce the historical bonds of goodwill between India and Kuwait and to advance their contemporary partnership.
