Wednesday marked a significant day for female representation at the ‘Cannes Film Festival’, featuring the premiere of the new Mad Max, a masterclass with Meryl Streep, and the head of France’s #MeToo movement.
Anya Taylor-Joy plays the blood-splattering main role in Furiosa, the most recent installment of the post-apocalyptic Mad Max series, with Chris Hemsworth, the hero of Thor.
They were scheduled to appear on the red carpet later on Wednesday for the international premiere. They will be performing at the Cote d’Azur festival, which runs through May 25, outside of competition.
In the last movie, Fury Road, Charlize Theron played a character who was younger than Taylor-Joy. Meanwhile, competition for the festival’s grand prize, the Palme d’Or, got underway with two very different films about women.
According to the synopsis, The Girl with the Needle tells the tale of a Danish woman who founded a clandestine adoption agency following World War I. Additionally, Agathe Riedinger’s debut feature film, Wild Diamond, centers on a teenage French girl who applies for a reality TV program in an attempt to gain fame and notoriety.
Streep masterclass
Meryl Streep, one of the most famous ladies in film history, will also be giving a masterclass one day after being awarded an honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony.
While accepting her honorary Palme d’Or from French actor Juliette Binoche, Streep, 74, teased the crowd, saying, “I’m just so grateful that you haven’t gotten sick of my face.”
