As temperatures in Washington rose over the weekend, a six-foot-tall wax sculpture of former US President Abraham Lincoln melted. The wax sculpture in Camp Barker, a Civil War-era refugee camp for formerly enslaved and freed African Americans, was deformed by temperatures that reportedly reached 37 degrees Celsius.
Authorities said that the statue’s head succumbed to the blazing heat first, followed by the legs. Authorities are currently fixing the sculpture. The structure comprised a candle and a wax structure with a placard reading, “Please blow out your wick within 1-2 minutes.”
The replica, commissioned by the non-profit CulturalDC, was set to remain at the site until September 2024. The organization also responded to the incident, saying, “Whether it’s the state of the nation, the approaching election, or this record-breaking heat, we are all over it!
Sandy Williams, a US-based artist, produced the statue as part of the Wax Monument Series. It was built on the location of Camp Barker, which currently houses an elementary school.
