The tragic case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has raised significant concerns regarding the nature of the crime. Dr. Subarna Goswami, a prominent doctor and additional general secretary of the All India Federation of Govt Doctors’ Association, has indicated that the post-mortem findings suggest the involvement of multiple assailants.
According to Dr. Goswami, the autopsy report revealed 151 grams of liquid from the vaginal swab, a quantity that implies the involvement of more than one perpetrator. She stated, “That quantity cannot be of one person. It suggests the involvement of multiple people.” The nature of the injuries inflicted on the victim further supports this assertion, as they are consistent with an attack that could not have been executed by a single individual.
The victim’s family also suspects that multiple individuals were involved in this heinous act. They have expressed their outrage and concern, particularly after the initial handling of the case by authorities, which included claims of suicide before the autopsy results confirmed sexual assault and murder. This incident has sparked nationwide protests among the medical community, demanding justice and better safety measures for healthcare professionals.
The case has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following a petition from the victim’s family, amid allegations of a potential cover-up by local authorities. The ongoing investigation has led to the arrest of a civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, who is suspected of being involved in the crime.
