The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is set to ban single-use plastic across the city starting January 1, 2025. GVMC Mayor Harivenkatakumari and Commissioner Sampath Kumar chaired a review meeting to discuss alternatives to single-use plastic items. They have instructed authorities to strictly enforce the new rules.

A study by the Autonomous University of Barcelona reveals that commercial tea bags made from polymer-based materials release millions of microplastics and nanoplastics when brewed. Tea bags made of nylon-6, polypropylene, and cellulose were found to release significant amounts of nano-sized particles, which can be absorbed by the body, posing potential health risks.
