A new quality standard starting on August 1 will likely make shoes more expensive. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced that shoes, sandals, and slippers sold in the market must meet new quality standards. Starting August 1, 2024, shoe manufacturers will need to follow the IS 6721 and IS 10702 guidelines. This new standard is expected to increase cost of making shoes.
However, shoe makers with an annual income of less than ₹50 crore are not required to follow this rule. Additionally, the rule won’t apply to old stock, and sellers must report the details of this stock on the BIS website.
From August 1, 46 items will be subject by new BIS standards. The bureau has shared this information on its website to raise awareness.
The new standards will ensure that shoes are stronger and more comfortable for consumers. However, the BIS has not mentioned how it plans to deal with the increased cost of materials used in making shoes.
The BIS is responsible for setting standards, checking conformity, and ensuring the quality of goods, articles, processes, systems, and services. It also sets the standards for product certification schemes, which provide third-party assurance of a product’s quality, safety, and reliability to consumers.
