Ordering food online has become a staple in many Indian households, simplifying everything from hosting large gatherings to satisfying late-night cravings. Swiggy, a leading player in the Indian online food delivery market, recently celebrated a decade in business as of August 2024. To mark this milestone, Swiggy’s CEO and co-founder, Sriharsha Majety, reflected on the company’s humble beginnings. On his LinkedIn profile, Majety shared a nostalgic recount of Swiggy’s launch day. “When we launched Swiggy on August 6, 2014, we ended the day with zero orders,” he noted. This candid admission underscores the challenging start faced by the company. However, the very next day, Swiggy received its first-ever order, which Majety described as the true beginning of their journey.
Majety highlighted the significant growth since those early days. “Among our earliest partners was Truffles, which initially saw just two orders a day on Swiggy. Today, they’ve achieved up to 7,261 orders in a single day, reflecting our collective progress,” he remarked. This dramatic increase in order volume illustrates Swiggy’s impact on its restaurant partners and its role in transforming food delivery practices. Reflecting on Swiggy’s evolution, Majety expressed gratitude towards their initial partner restaurants. “Thank you to those who believed in us when food delivery was still a novel concept,” he said. He also highlighted the importance of these early supporters in Swiggy’s journey, noting that their backing was instrumental in making “Swiggy it” a well-known phrase across India. In his reflection, Majety also acknowledged Swiggy’s growth from a small startup to a major player in the industry. “Today, we proudly partner with over 300,000 restaurants,” he stated. This extensive network underscores Swiggy’s significant presence in the food delivery sector and its ability to cater to a wide range of culinary preferences. Founded by Sriharsha Majety, Nandan Reddy, and Rahul Jaimini, Swiggy now competes with other food delivery giants like Zomato, a company established in 2008. Despite the competition, Swiggy’s journey from zero orders to a leading position in the market highlights its successful transformation and enduring impact on the industry.
