As anticipation builds for the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament, opposition leaders gathered to discuss key issues and their expectations for the Budget to be presented on July 23. All opposition parties, except the Trinamool Congress (TMC), attended the meeting and urged the government to allow them to raise their concerns in Parliament.
Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and K Suresh, called for a Deputy Speaker from the Opposition and voiced objections over the NEET paper leak. Meanwhile, the YSR Congress, JD (U), and BJD advocated for special category status for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha, respectively.
Another major topic discussed during the meeting was the controversy surrounding the Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage undertaken by devotees of Lord Shiva. The controversy arose when the Uttar Pradesh government mandated that food establishments along the Kanwar Yatra route display their owners’ names.
While intended to promote transparency and accountability, this move has been seen by many as a possible effort to identify and target Muslim-owned businesses. The budget session begins on Monday and will include 19 sittings until August 12.
During this period, the government is expected to present six bills, including one to replace the 90-year-old Aircraft Act, and seek Parliament’s approval for Jammu and Kashmir’s budget, which is under central rule.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will table the Economic Survey on Monday and present the Union Budget on Tuesday.
