China & Pakistan Attempt To Block India & G4 Nations’ UN Security Council Bid

R Ravindra, charge d’affaires of India’s UN mission, has highlighted that the UN Security Council’s failures stem from inadequate geographic representation. Advocating for Africa’s permanent membership, he stated that such a move is crucial for enhancing the Council’s effectiveness.
Representing the G-4 (India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan), Ravindra argued that including Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia-Pacific in permanent roles is essential for a more representative and efficient UNSC.
Sierra Leone, holding the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, convened a meeting to advocate for better African representation on the Council.
President Julius Maada Bio highlighted that Africa, home to over 1.3 billion people and comprising 54 countries, remains unjustly excluded from permanent seats despite its significant UN membership.
He criticized the Council for being outdated, reflecting its 1945 origins when much of Africa was still under colonial rule. Africa is advocating for two permanent seats and two additional non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council, up from the current three.
Mr. Ravindra expressed the G-4’s full support for these demands, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring Africa’s rightful place in a reformed multilateral system.
He also pointed out the incongruity of Africa, which accounts for over 70% of the UNSC’s agenda items, lacking a permanent voice at the Council’s decision-making table.
