A local official who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the early morning attack targeted a base in the Dera Ismail Khan area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, close to the Afghan border. The officer said, “We are still determining if they are all military personnel because many of them were killed while they were sleeping and in civilian clothes.” According to Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan, a recently formed organization connected to the Pakistan Taliban, the attack started at 2:30 am (2130 GMT) with a single fighter carrying out a “martyrdom attack” before more fighters invaded the property. The Pakistani army has not yet responded to the event.
