On Tuesday, an unidentified person called the family of a Hyderabadi student studying in Cleveland, Ohio, claiming that the young one had been kidnapped by a drug-selling gang in Cleveland.
They demanded an immediate payment of 1,200 US dollars for the release of the student. The caller, who identified himself as being from the US, warned the student’s father, who lives in Nacharam in Medchal-Malkajgiri, that if he did not pay up immediately, the gang would sell the student’s kidneys.
On March 18, the family wrote a letter to the Indian consulate in Chicago in an attempt to find Saleem. The kidnapped student’s father immediately gave his Washington-based relative the phone number of the mysterious caller so they could notify the Cleveland police of the incident.
The caller talked after a brief period of time during which we could hear the faint sound of someone crying. We don’t know if our son was involved,” Saleem remarked. I am stunned right now. The caller declined to provide proof that he had custody of my son. I attempted to reassure him that we would do what he asked, but he became irate and stopped talking to me, Abdul Mohammed added.
Abdul Mohammed, Saleem’s son, left for the US in May 2023 to pursue a master’s degree in information technology at Cleveland University; he last spoke with the family on March 7. Following a report from family members in the US, Cleveland police issued a lookout notice for Abdul Mohammed.
