Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has expressed gratitude for China’s strategic alliance with his country, saying that the two countries respect each other and that Beijing fully supports the Indian Ocean island’s sovereignty.
His comments came amid bilateral ties with India and Maldives hit rock bottom after he took office in November 2023. Muizzu returned to the Maldives after a high-profile visit to China. He also noted that China has provided assistance to the development of the Maldives since establishing diplomatic relations in 1972.
He also mentioned that bilateral relations had reached a new height as a result of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Being a pro-China leader, Muizzu tried to bring the Maldives closer to Beijing during his visit to China, and both nations strengthened their relations to a “strategic alliance.”
China is not a country that would interfere with the internal affairs of the Maldives, which is why the two countries have a strong relationship, Muizzu stated. He further added that the Maldives and China respect each other, and China fully supports the Maldives’ sovereignty.
Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping puts the interest of citizens first and says that China’s economy has reached new heights under his leadership, said Mohamed Muizzu. Reportedly, the President expressed his belief that China-Maldives relations will continue to grow stronger in the future.
