The Supreme Court’s 9-judge Constitution bench on Wednesday ruled 8:1 that states have the authority to regulate industrial alcohol. This decision overturned a 1990 ruling from a 7-judge bench in the synthetics and chemicals case, which stated otherwise. CJI DY Chandrachud led the majority, while Justice BV Nagarathna dissented, arguing that only the Centre should have this legislative power.
