Endangered black-necked cranes have been spotted in the Himalayan wetlands at Hanle, Ladakh, around 4,500 meters high. These migratory birds, protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, are venerated by local Buddhists. They typically pair for life and raise 1-2 chicks annually. The Ladakh population is estimated at 66-69 individuals, with small numbers also in Arunachal Pradesh.
