The Congress party has launched a strong critique of PM Narendra Modi’s recent remarks advocating for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which he described as necessary to replace what he termed a “communal civil code” that discriminates against various groups. During his Independence Day speech, Modi stated that many believe the current civil code fosters discrimination and should be replaced with a secular version to promote equality and unity in modern society.
Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh responded vehemently, accusing Modi of distorting historical facts and insulting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Ramesh emphasized that Modi’s characterization of the civil code as “communal” undermines Ambedkar’s legacy, who championed reforms in Hindu personal laws in the 1950s, despite opposition from groups like the RSS and Jan Sangh. He criticized the Prime Minister’s comments as reflecting a “capacity for malice” and misrepresentation of history.
Additionally, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera questioned Modi’s commitment to the Constitution, pointing out the inconsistency of calling Ambedkar’s code communal while taking an oath to uphold the Constitution. Khera also raised concerns about Modi’s approach to addressing issues related to minority communities, particularly in the context of safety for Bangladeshi Hindus.
Modi’s push for a UCC aligns with the BJP’s long-standing agenda to replace India’s diverse personal laws with a uniform set governing marriage, divorce, and inheritance. This initiative has been met with mixed reactions, with critics arguing that it threatens the secular fabric of India by imposing a singular legal framework on diverse religious communities.
