In a significant development, Russia has acknowledged the recruitment of Indian nationals into the Russian military as support staff, stating that it never intended for them to be part of the Russian Army. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi “very strongly” raised the issue with President Vladimir Putin during his recent visit to Russia.
In comments made by Russia’s Charge d’affaires Roman Babushkin, the Russian government has expressed its desire for a quick resolution to this matter. Babushkin stated that the recruitment of these Indian nationals was a purely commercial endeavor, with most of them coming to Russia on tourist visas and working illegally without the appropriate work permits.
The Russian diplomat emphasized that the number of Indians involved, estimated to be between 50 to 100 people, is insignificant in the context of the wider conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He reiterated that Russia never wanted these Indian nationals to be part of its military forces, and their presence was solely driven by their desire to “make money.”
Following the recent deaths of two Indian nationals who were recruited by the Russian Army, the Indian government has expressed its utmost concern over this issue. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has demanded a “verified stop” to any further recruitment of Indian citizens by the Russian military, stating that such activities would not be in line with the India-Russia partnership.
In response, the Russian government has promised to ensure the early discharge and return home of all Indian nationals serving in the Russian military as support staff. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, who accompanied Prime Minister Modi on his visit to Russia, confirmed that the Russian side had made this commitment.
The two sides are now working on the logistics of how to expeditiously bring these Indian nationals back home. Babushkin also acknowledged that the families of those killed should be compensated and provided with Russian citizenship, as per the contractual obligations.
This development highlights the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly in the context of India’s long-standing relationship with Russia. The Indian government’s firm stance and Russia’s willingness to address the issue reflect the importance both countries place on maintaining their strategic partnership.
As the situation continues to evolve, the repatriation of the Indian nationals and the prevention of any further recruitment will be crucial in preserving the trust and understanding between India and Russia.
