Hamas Announces ‘National Unity’ Agreement with Palestinian Rivals in Beijing
Hamas announced on Tuesday that it has signed an agreement in Beijing with various Palestinian groups, including Fatah, to pursue "national unity" and jointly govern Gaza post-war.
Hamas announced on Tuesday that it has signed an agreement in Beijing with various Palestinian groups, including Fatah, to pursue “national unity” and jointly govern Gaza post-war.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who hosted the discussions, stated that the agreement involves forming an “interim national reconciliation government” for Gaza’s future.
This announcement follows more than nine months of conflict triggered by Hamas’s October attack on southern Israel, which resulted in significant casualties and ongoing hostilities.
Neither Israel nor the United States would support any post-war plan involving Hamas, which Washington designates as a terrorist organization. While the viability of the Beijing agreement remains uncertain, it highlights China’s unique position to facilitate reconciliation between Palestinian factions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi noted that the “Beijing Declaration” includes forming an interim reconciliation government for Gaza. Fatah official Mahmoud al-Aloul expressed gratitude to China for its support, though he did not specify the details of the agreement with Hamas and other groups.
Envoys from Egypt, Algeria, and Russia also attended the meeting, reflecting their roles in the conflict and diplomatic efforts.
