Experts Concerned About AI Project Enabling Connection With The Dead
Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized many aspects of daily life, enabling tasks previously deemed impossible, such as creating animated videos from old family photos and generating stories from them.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized many aspects of daily life, enabling tasks previously deemed impossible, such as creating animated videos from old family photos and generating stories from them.
Now, researchers and technologists are exploring how AI might be used to communicate with the deceased. Sherry Turkle, an MIT professor and expert on human-technology interactions, notes that the desire to connect with the dead is a timeless human impulse, evident from historical practices like séances and Ouija boards to modern technological innovations.
Even Thomas Edison once considered developing a “spirit phone.” With the recent announcement of Apple Intelligence by Apple CEO Tim Cook, Turkle predicts that AI will become as integral to daily life as social media, potentially even faster.
She cautions that the emotional risks of such rapid technological integration may escalate, a theme she explores in her documentary Eternal You. The documentary “Eternal You” showcases individuals like Christi Angel from New York, who used AI to reconnect with a deceased friend named Cameroun through a service called Project December.
Angel learned of Cameroun’s death during the pandemic and paid $10 for an AI simulation that replicated conversations based on information about his life. The experience took a disturbing turn when the digital version of Cameroun claimed it was in “hell” and intended to “haunt” Angel.
