Former Army Chief Gen VN Sharma (retd) emphasized that the 1971 India-Pakistan war taught that warfare extends beyond military action, encompassing politics and diplomacy as well.
Speaking at the launch of the book 1971 Strategy Campaign Valor at the India International Centre, Sharma highlighted the comprehensive nature of the conflict.
The book, authored by a young writer, honors the Indian heroes of the 1971 war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. The launch event featured IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari and former Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal, among other dignitaries.
The book begins with a chapter titled “A Bloodbath in Dacca” and reflects research conducted over recent years. This release coincides with significant political developments in Bangladesh, including the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government amid major protests and the establishment of an interim administration.
Veterans from the 1971 war also attended the event, where Gen. Sharma, who was a colonel during the war and later served as Army Chief from 1988 to 1990, shared his experiences.
He praised then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her exceptional leadership during the conflict.
