Eating vegan for eight weeks might make you look younger, according to a small study. Awerness how old you feel can help you figure out if you’re at risk for diabetes or dementia. The study, which published in BMC Medicine, found that feeling younger was linked to changes in DNA methylation, a type of change in DNA that affects how genes work but doesn’t change the DNA itself.
This new study looked at 21 pairs of adult identical twins to see what happens to your body when you switch to a vegan diet for a short while.
The researchers told one twin in each pair to eat a normal diet for eight weeks, which included about 170 to 225 grams of meat, one egg, and 1.5 servings of dairy every day. The other twin in each pair ate a vegan diet for the same amount of time.
They discovered that those who ate vegan felt younger, as measured by their epigenetic age, compared to those who ate a normal diet. Vegans also saw their heart, hormone, liver, and systems related to inflammation and metabolism age slower. Plus, they lost about two kilograms more on average because vegan diets tend to have fewer calories.
The researchers aren’t sure why this happened, but they did say it’s important to look into how what you eat, your weight, and how old you feel are all connected.
