In a groundbreaking move, Uber has become the first ride-hailing platform to secure an aggregator license from the Delhi Transport Department to operate buses under the Delhi Premium Bus Scheme. This historic development marks a significant milestone in Uber’s expansion into the public transportation sector, as Delhi becomes the first state to award such a license.
The official launch of Uber Shuttle in Delhi follows a successful pilot program that demonstrated a substantial demand for bus services in the city. Amit Deshpande, Head of Uber Shuttle India, expressed his excitement about the new service, stating, “Following a successful pilot programme, where we witnessed significant demand for buses, we are thrilled to officially introduce the convenience of Uber rides to buses in Delhi.”
Uber Shuttle, designed to cater to the daily commuting needs of Delhi residents, was previously tested in Delhi-NCR and has been operational in Kolkata under an MoU with the West Bengal government. The service offers commuters a range of convenient features, including the ability to pre-book seats up to a week in advance, track the live location and route of the bus, and view its expected time of arrival (ETA) through the Uber app.
To ensure a seamless and comfortable experience for passengers, each shuttle vehicle will accommodate between 19 and 50 passengers and will be operated by local fleet partners using Uber’s cutting-edge technology. This integration of Uber’s technology with local fleet partners is expected to significantly enhance the overall commuting experience in Delhi.
The introduction of Uber Shuttle in Delhi marks a significant step forward in the company’s mission to revolutionize public transportation and reduce car ownership. By providing a convenient and reliable alternative to private vehicles, Uber aims to contribute to the reduction of traffic congestion and improve air quality in the city.
As Uber continues to expand its operations in India, the company remains committed to working closely with state governments and local authorities to develop innovative solutions that address the unique transportation challenges faced by each region. The successful launch of Uber Shuttle in Delhi is a testament to the company’s ability to adapt to local needs and deliver high-quality services that meet the expectations of modern commuters.
