One person died and six were injured when 18 coaches of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailed in Jharkhand early Tuesday. The accident occurred around 3:45 a.m. in Bara Bambu village near Chakradharpur.
Rescue teams and ambulances quickly responded to the scene. Om Prakash Charan from South Eastern Railways mentioned a nearby goods train derailment, but it’s unclear if the two incidents happened simultaneously.
“At least 18 of the 22 coaches of the 12810 Howrah-Mumbai Mail via Nagpur derailed near Barabamboo station in SER’s Chakradharpur division at 3:45 AM,” he said. “The derailed coaches included 16 passenger coaches, one power car, and one pantry car.”” Six passengers were injured in the accident and received initial medical aid in Barabamboo.
They are now being transferred to Chakradharpur for more advanced treatment,” said another senior SER official. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, he added.
Several trains have been cancelled or diverted due to the derailment. The cancelled trains include the Howrah-Kantabanji Ispat Express (22861), Kharagpur-Dhanbad Express, and Howrah-Barbil Express.
The South Bihar Express (13288) was diverted, and the Asansol Tata Memu Pass Special Train (08173) was short-terminated at Adra. In an official statement, Indian Railways reported that the 12810 Howrah-CSMT Express derailed near Chakradharpur, between Rajkharswan West Outer and Barabamboo in the Chakradharpur division.
The statement confirmed that ARME with staff and ADRM CKP are on-site, with six injured persons receiving first aid from the railway medical team.
