Mahalaya Amavasya, observed on Oct 10 this year, marks the conclusion of Mahalaya Paksham, the fortnight dedicated to ancestors. It is considered an auspicious day to perform Tarpanam for departed family members, especially when their death Tithi is unknown. In Telangana, the day also marks the beginning of Bathukamma, followed by Devi Navaratri celebrations.
