The SC has rejected a plea seeking to abolish hanging as the method of executing death sentences in India. However, the court left the issue open for future consideration if scientific evidence shows another method could reduce suffering. The Centre may also constitute an expert panel to examine alternative execution methods and prisoner dignity.
