Director Rahul Sankrityan has clarified that "Ranabaali" is not connected to India's Independence movement or freedom struggle. The film is set in an isolated world where people have little knowledge of the outside world. They believe Madras marks the edge of the earth and consider their village an entire country, offering a unique narrative perspective.
