India’s Independence Was Not Always Planned For Aug 15

India celebrates Independence Day on August 15, but freedom was initially planned for June 30, 1948. Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, moved the date forward due to rising political tensions, communal violence and growing demands for independence. He chose August 15 because it marked Japan’s surrender in World War II, symbolising victory and peace.
