The Centre has rejected claims that ethanol production is responsible for India’s recent sugar price surge. The government attributed the increase to lower domestic output, festive demand, weather-related crop damage, tighter global supplies, and speculation. Sugar prices rose from ₹48.18 per kg on July 20 to ₹55.70 by yesterday, officials said.
