7-Year Jail Term For Religious Conversion In This State

Maharashtra’s Freedom of Religion Act, 2026, will take effect on Aug 28. It makes forced, fraudulent or coercive religious conversion a criminal offence, with up to seven years in jail. Voluntary conversion requires 60 days’ prior notice. The law also sets rules for interfaith marriages, children’s religion, mass conversions and repeat offenders.
