Sri Lanka struggled against India's bowling attack on Day 3 of the first Test, reaching 99 for five wickets at lunch in their first innings. Manav Suthar claimed two wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja also took one each. Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan were at the crease on 14 and 8, respectively. India scored 462 in the 1st innings.
