Syria's ousted president Bashar al-Assad and former Deraa security chief Atef Najib have been sentenced to death by a Damascus court. Assad was convicted in absentia of premeditated murder linked to alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, while Najib was convicted of murder and torture. Assad fled to Moscow in December 2024 after his regime fell.
