New Zealand Issues Tsunami Alert After 6.3 Quake

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Te Anau in New Zealand's South Island, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning. The epicentre was located about 40 km north of the town, a gateway to the popular Fiordland region. However, the USGS and GFZ estimated the quake at 5.9 magnitude, stating it occurred at a depth of more than 50 km beneath the surface.
